THE
HUMAN
BIT.

I'm Coenie Teichert, a filmmaker and author based in Cape Town. I like complex people, uneasy silences, and stories that follow you home.
My work moves between commercials, short films, features and fiction. Different formats, same obsession: finding the human detail that makes a story land.
WINTER
TAPES.
Every July, the town of Voss Bay switches off its lights, draws its curtains, and waits for the night to pass. Nobody will say why.
Lora Williams has built her career on hearing what everyone else misses. For seven years, her podcast, Static Hours, has taught a loyal audience to listen closely and to trust only what can be checked. Then, alone in her soundproofed booth in Cape Town, she plays back a recording that contains something she cannot explain, and a minute later, her brother's voice note arrives. Henry Van den Merwe, the old man who once let a lonely child run her tape recorder loose in his archive, has been found dead below the cliff path.
Lora has not been home in ten years, not since the winter her mother slipped into a silence no doctor could explain. She drives north for a funeral and finds a fog-bound town that has learned to live with its secrets: a ledger in the Town Hall basement, a council that keeps careful count of its losses, a lighthouse that flickers when it should not, and a low tone behind her left ear that has followed her since she was twenty-three.
What begins as a search for one old man's last weeks becomes the investigation of a lifetime. Over the years that follow, Lora gathers an unlikely team. Her brother Danny, a mechanic who has never told anyone what he heard in their mother's house. Lucas, a small-town doctor with thirty years of his late father's field recordings. Priya, a psychologist who refuses to let anyone hear a ghost before the evidence is in. And Theo, whose family name carries more weight on that coast than he ever wanted it to.
Armed with a spirit box, EMF meters, a thermal camera and a strict set of rules, they take their investigation into some of the Cape's most storied haunted places: a dungeon cell inside the Castle of Good Hope, a grand house in Rondebosch, the keeper's cottage by an old lighthouse, an empty field in the heart of District Six, and a derelict building far inland. Their method is simple. Log everything. Question everything. Never feed the box a name. But the numbers keep arriving before the words do, and the further they follow them, the harder it becomes to say whether they are chasing a haunting, a town's buried guilt, or the way a story, told often enough, can reach into the people who live inside it.
Winter Tapes is a slow-burning, atmospheric paranormal mystery for readers who love ghost stories that take their evidence seriously. Part investigative podcast, part family drama, part haunted-coast gothic, it is set along the wild West Coast of South Africa and asks what a community owes the people it has chosen not to see, and what it costs to finally say their names out loud.
